Sat 27Aug16 The Northern Glyderau Mountains

The Glyderau (pronounced Glyders or Glithers) is a 500 million year old mountain range in Snowdonia, North Wales, consisting of 9 peaks including some of the tallest and finest mountains in Wales.

This walk route will tackle the northern section. Starting with an initial steady but relentless 800m+ lung busting climb from 109m up to the summit of Elidir Fawr (924m).

The rest of the walk is much easier, because the mountain range peaks are interconnected by a series of cols called a “Bwlch” in Wales, but nothing razor thin or scary.

The Bwlch Y Marchkyn ridge passes high above Marchlyn Mawr lake, the upper reservoir for the Dinorwig Hydroelectric Power Station located deep inside man-made caverns carved within the Elidir Fawr mountain.

The next peak is Mynydd Perfedd (812m) with great views of the famous Atlantic Slab, the most dramatic cliff in Wales which gets its name from its unusual magma wave rock formation.

Then Foe-goch (831m), which has one a half of the mountain missing. Torn away by the ice age to create an exciting drop and unobscured views of neighbouring mountains.

The final peak is Y Garn (947m), one of the top ten highest mountains in Wales. Smooth on one side and steep & jagged on the other. With superb views of Snowdon and its satellites.

The descent passes waterfalls & Llyn Idwal tarn. Named after Prince Idwal who died in battle with the Saxons and was cremated here in 942.

This walk is mostly on good paths but involves some steep climbs, scree, wind & chill at heights above 800m+ most of the day. So bring a thin warm shell you can remove whilst ascending & then slip on.

Sleeping over is highly recommended due to the remote location. See the diary for the Llanberis Wales Bank holiday weekend away. If you are coming just for the day then please let the walk leader know well in advance due to the limited car parking and poor phone signals.

Distance: 9 Miles

Walk grade: Hard

Meet 9:30 at YHA Snowdon Llanberis, North Wales, LL55 4SR.
