7Jan17 Scandale Horseshoe (With 5 Wainwright’s) The Scandale
Horseshoe is a classic route which includes no less than: 5 Wainwrights, 2 Nuttalls,
2 Hewitts and 1 Marilyn (WNHM) The views on both sides are excellent and
improve with each step. Starting almost at sea level from Ambleside
we will ascend Low Pike (508m W), High Pike (658m W) and Dove Crag (792m WNH)
which is an ideal spot to rest, refuel the legs with food and enjoy the views
before we negotiate the U-bend section of the horseshoe. After lunch we drop a lot of height to
cross the saddle and checkout the interesting features at High Bakestones,
Little Hart Crag (637m WNH) and Scandale Tarn. At 520m
there is an escape option down Scandale Pass quickly
back to Ambleside in case we can’t regain the height due to bad weather or if
anyone feels they need to exit. But the intention is to steeply carry on up
Red Screes (776m WM) where there are excellent views of the Far Eastern
Fells. Followed by a generally easy and gradual
descent via Raven Crag (759m), Snarker Pike (644m)
and Flesh Crags (500m) to Ambleside. These
route is not severe but is rated hard, high,
remote and cold! Yet it is fantastic and well within most walkers’ ability.
Ultimately you don’t know until you try. We really welcome beginners, we will
support you and we don’t expect you to rush first time. We were all newbies
once and it is an honour to help guide someone on their first winter mountain
walk. If you are young, healthy, got a positive
mental attitude and do some practice walks, running or cycling and bring the
proper equipment, food, extra food and snacks you should be ok and will
improve very quickly. However, if you have underlying health
issues or make no effort to prepare whatsoever you risk
spoiling your enjoyment and that of the whole group. Sleeping over is highly recommended due to
the remote location. See the diary for the Ambleside winter weekend holiday
weekend away. If you are coming just for the day then please let the walk
leader know at least a few days beforehand because winter plans sometimes
need to change. Meet 9:15am at Ambleside YHA, Ambleside,
Cumbria, LA22 0EU See map: Distance: 9.5 Miles with 900m ascent Walk grade: Hard |
