Fri 8Jul16 - Sun 10Jul16 Ennerdale Weekend £32 for 2 nights Get
away from it all and spend the weekend with friends at YHA Ennerdale in the Western Lake District. Situated in a
remote area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a wooded valley and surrounded
by famous mountains, conveniently inter-connected with ridges so we can bag
several peaks without going up and down too much. No wonder this was Alfred
Wainwright’s favourite spot and he asked for his ashes to be scattered there,
so tread carefully! Places
are limited so grab a bargain quick. If you snooze you lose. Subject
to weather, the group and forestry work in the area the Saturday and Sunday
walks will be:- ·
Red Pike (755m), High Stile (807m), High Crag (744m)
and Haystacks (897m) over 9miles. Hard. ·
Pillar (892m) over 9miles. Hard. ·
I am also looking into other options. Beginners
are welcome, but try do a few Yorkshire Dale
practice walks first. This will be a proper mountain walking weekend up some
of the country’s highest peaks. We want you to come and you will be supported
but you need to prepare. Sorry
places can’t be reserved without full payment, or sold as individual nights.
The total cost is only £32 for 2 nights. Contact the organiser (Mike Ramplin) for his bank payment details to book. Email:
mikeramplin[at]hotmail.co.uk replacing [at] with @ This
is a very remote area indeed (which is the exciting attraction) with no pubs,
shops, petrol stations, wi-fi and little or no
mobile signal. Due to protective measures from the Forestry Commission, only
one car can be taken up to the hostel, any additional cars can be parked at Bowness Knott (3 miles away). But I have got walkie talkies and will work out a rota to get everyone
there and back. We
will make our own entertainment and the YHA have a bar, serve a good
breakfast, packed lunches, dinner and have self-catering kitchen if you want
to bring your own. Don’t
be put off by the bargain price if you have never stayed at a YHA before. They offer good quality accommodation but we
got a fantastic group discount for Take A Hike private rooms (separate male
or female). Alternative
accommodation is available but please try buy up the pre-paid beds first.
Twin rooms for couples, B&B and camping may be a lot more expensive
without the discounts and prices will increase the longer you leave it.
Contact them directly for these alternatives. Day
visitors are welcome but sleepover is more practical given the long distance
and poor phone signal. Let Mike know if you are coming and if you would like
to join our group meals and evening socialising. Remember
this is a Take A Hike members only weekend, but it
is easy to join the club and it is a great way to meet new walking friends. Mike
will try help arrange car sharing to save petrol. Address: YHA Ennerdale, Cleator, Cumbria, CA23 3AX Website: http://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/ennerdale Map: http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=314257&Y=514156&A=Y&Z=115 More details about this event will follow.
